Welcome to Reception

At Finedon Infant School our aim is provide children with the key skills which equips them to succeed in their life beyond our school.  This journey begins in our Early Years Foundation Stage provision where we inspire children with a rich and meaningful start to their education.

We provide a stimulating learning environment both within our vibrant indoor and outdoor provision, which provides exciting learning opportunities which promote challenge and exploration, alongside a real love of learning. Our classrooms, alongside visits in the local area, including to our school allotment, provide valuable first-hand experiences which allows children the opportunity to communicate and sustain shared thinking.

Every child has access to our knowledge based bespoke curriculum which meets the needs of all our learners and offers high quality, engaging learning experiences for all.

We understand that play is an integral part of learning, and this is at the heart of our provision. We believe that the correct mix of adult directed, and uninterrupted child-initiated play, alongside effective interaction from highly skilled adults ensures the best outcomes for pupils. All activities are expertly modelled, and children are given sufficient time, support, and resources to repeat and practise them.

Early reading and writing are fostered in Reception through the use of the phonics program Read Write Inc. We incorporate aspects of the ‘Talk for Writing’ approach to encourage story-telling and writing, allowing the children to be immersed in the world of traditional tales and rhymes.

We work collaboratively with parents and carers to encourage independent and enthusiastic learners who thrive and reach their full potential in our setting, at home and in their wider community.

As part of the learning and teaching process, children are assessed in relation to their progress towards the Early Learning Goals at the end of their time in Reception. These judgements are made on the basis of observations and in-depth knowledge of the children acquired through ongoing assessment.

We understand that starting school is an important milestone for children. We work hard to ensure that all our pupils have a seamless transition into their new school environment whereby children and parents feel valued, informed and supported.  We offer a range of transition activities including staff visiting pre-school settings and nurseries, an stay and play sessions in school, a Teddy Bear’s Picnic, and an information evening for new parents.

We look forward to welcoming your child into Finedon Infant School and are very happy to answer any questions you may have. Working in partnership with home is very important to us so that together we are able to give your child the best possible start to their educational journey.
